what I wanna see more in media r painfully average people being lgbt, let the 40 year old school janitor be trans, let the grandpa who just sits on his porch be bi, let the girl who's on her way to an office job be lesbian, let the guy who's at the same bus stop everyday be nonbinary, and so on and so forth, idk I don't know why people always expect lgbt ppl to be this alt fashion teen/young adult and stuff when sometimes it's literally just some guy
because we're never seen as morally neutral- we have to be either good or bad in a clear way. Obviously, this isn't possible, we all have good and dark inside us which is coaxed out by our circumstances, which is true for everyone.
But suddenly you pull out a 'diverse' character of any kind, and it has to be made clear that we're supposed to really like them or really dislike them. It can't just be a random detail that a character is muslim or black or deaf or trans, it has to be their ultimate character motivation 'or there's no point bringing it up- how would that further the plot in any way?'
Nobody is a good person or a bad person for the way they are born. It will strongly affect the way their life goes and therefore the way they view the world, but it doesn't make you good or bad, if that's something a person can even be.
No, there's very little nuance to queer characters because queer people- like other groups- are seen as a mass, a hive mind who all agree on things and are all at the same place and standardised, with no in-disputes or disagreements. Individual stories do not get told, and something which is just part of us always has to somehow drive the plot or else 'what's the point of the character then?'
We're not 'just some guy' in media. Not just yet.
